Workshops

The practices a class cannot hold

Single-subject sessions for the subtle work — breath, mudra, alignment, cleansing, meditation — given the time and attention a two-hour class never quite has.

Subjects

Six rooms worth entering

Workshops are scheduled around the daily classes and announced to students as the season goes. Tell us which subject you want, and we will tell you when it next runs.

  1. A young woman practising alternate-nostril breathing outdoors with eyes closed

    01 Prāṇāyāma

    Pranayama

The breathing practices a two-hour class can only touch: full yogic breath, kapalabhati, anuloma viloma, bhastrika, ujjayi and retention — with the contraindications taught as carefully as the techniques.

Every level. Begins at the beginning.

  2. Black-and-white study of a hand held in a gentle mudra

    02 Mudrā · Bandha

    Mudras and bandhas

Hand gestures, the three locks and the great seal — the quiet mechanics that hold energy in a practice, and why the old texts care about them so much.

Useful to anyone with a regular pranayama practice.

  3. Rows of small brass oil lamps glowing with flickering flames

    03 Kuṇḍalinī

    Kundalini-oriented practice

Chakra-focused sequences, breath, sound and concentration, taught soberly and within the Hatha tradition — without promises of lightning.

    Best after some pranayama experience.

  4. The teacher crouching beside a student to guide her into crow pose, blocks at hand

    04 Āsana

    Alignment and adjustments

A slow afternoon on a handful of postures: what the joints are doing, where common strain comes from, how props change everything. Valuable for students and for teachers.

Students, and teachers refining their eye.

  5. A thin line of incense smoke rising in quiet light

    05 Ṣaṭkarma

    Kriyas and traditional practices

The cleansing practices of Hatha yoga — explained, demonstrated and, where appropriate, practised — so they stop being rumours and become tools.

    Curious practitioners and trainee teachers.

  6. A silhouetted figure meditating on an open wooden veranda with sun through the railings

    06 Dhyāna

    Meditation

How to sit, what to do with the mind, and how to build a daily sitting practice that survives going home. Concentration first; the rest follows.

    Every level.

Workshop questions

Something not covered here? Ask on WhatsApp — someone who teaches the class will answer, usually within the day.

What workshops does Santhi run?

Focused sessions on pranayama, mudras and bandhas, kundalini-oriented practice, alignment and the traditional practices that a two-hour class cannot hold properly — kriyas, chanting, the philosophy behind what the body is doing.

How often are workshops held, and how do I hear about them?

They run through the season around the daily class schedule, and are announced to students and on request. Tell us which subject interests you and we will let you know when the next one is set.

Do I need to be an experienced practitioner to attend a workshop?

For most subjects, no — a pranayama or mudra workshop begins at the beginning. Where a session builds on earlier practices we say so when the date is announced, so nobody arrives in the wrong room.

Can a group book a private workshop?

Write with your group size, your dates and the subject you would like to study, and we will tell you what can be put together.

Breath first. Always.

If you only take one workshop, make it pranayama. Everything else in the practice gets easier afterwards.
